There was an eighteenth century poet named Ashughchivan who said, “The world is like a hotel and people in it are the guests. This is the state of the world; people come and go.”

Through attachment, the dark forces will sap your psychic energy and not let you go forward to the greater path. Of course, the Teaching does not say that you cannot have property or objects such as money, savings, and so on, but have them without attachment. Do not let them control you. You must control them.

When superficial objects and superficial values continuously limit your freedom and expansion, you cannot belong to yourself. I remember seeing a very comical incident in the Middle East. There was a beautiful medical doctor. One day he become very angry with the goose that lived in his backyard. Early one morning I said, “Good morning, Doctor. How are you?” “I am fine,” he replied. “What are you going to do today?” I asked. “I will see a few patients, write some prescriptions, and so on.” We talked briefly, then the goose appeared, and he started cursing and chasing the goose. He chased that goose off and on from eight in the morning until three in the afternoon, but it was impossible to catch. I was laughing so hard. Finally, he sat down and said, “I will have a heart attack over that goose.” “Good,” I said, “then the goose can write prescriptions for you.”

I realized that humanity has its own goose which it runs after day and night — the sex goose, money goose, property goose, ego goose, vanity goose, and so on. Many people chase the sex goose day and night until they are crazy. They want to catch that goose. When it is too late in the afternoon of their lives, when they are in their eighties or nineties, they feel very bad. You cannot catch those geese; you can only chase them! Disciples must know these things and handle them accordingly.
